Becoming Familiar with Tsim Sha Tsui, HK
We needed a change, we needed a break, we packed our bags and headed out of the country. To be a first-timer in Hongkong, a much needed preparation on where to go was on the agenda, how to go from point A to B was studied, and most of all the sights to see were researched. First thing that came to mind about Hongkong is that it is a shopping mecca, temples everywhere, authentic Chinese food, and many more. We intended to discover all these and more during our trip.

Since we took a red-eye flight from Cebu to HK, we arrived past 1am at the HK International Airport. We alighted at the bus stop in Nathan road which is 2 blocks to the guesthouse. When we were in Nathan road, we looked for a temple to our right and a G2000 to our left so we will know our bus stop. The ride from the airport is like riding a roller coaster. Be sure to drink an anti-vertigo medicine (e.g. Bonamine) an hour before. From the bus stop we headed east and it took us 10 minutes or less to the guesthouse. We arrived at the Golden Crown Guesthouse at around 3am and took a much needed rest. The Golden Crown Guesthouse is located at the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui which for us is the most convenient location. It is very close to the East Tsim Sha Tsui metro train station, malls are very close by, and across the block is the bus stop. It's not a grand accommodation like a five-star hotel, but we were not there for a hotel vacation and we only needed a warm, safe, and affordable place to crash in for the night. The guesthouse was perfect for what we needed.
We spent the first day walking around the vicinity. We headed east and walked along Nathan road. We checked out which shops sold what items so we could buy them later during the trip. We scouted for restaurants and made sure that these had english translations on their menu.We walked past the sky-rise buildings, the space museum, and the Peninsula Hotel, checked out the 1881 Heritage, and bought a very delicious wife cake at Wing Wah bakery which is located at the Star Ferry Terminal. We sat and rested our feet at the park overlooking the Victoria Harbor and near the Tsim Sha Tsui century old clock tower. We were amazed at the HK Museum of Art for its architecture. Lastly, we took a leisurely walk at the Avenue of Stars overlooking the Victoria Harbor before we proceeded to Nan Lian Garden.
TIPS:
- Bring a travel-size umbrella unless you are willing to buy it from HK. HK early spring weather is mostly overcast with a few rain showers throughout the day.
- Bus drivers do not give out change; thus, be prepared for an exact change or an amount close to the bus fare.
- Buses have drop counters where you can place your fare. These are located near the driver.
- Most HK buses are double-deckers. The upper deck fare is twice the lower deck amount.
