Food: Le Macarons Not Macaroons

"The belly rules the mind."

In my case, the macarons rule the photoshoot session. The macarons are cracking right before my eyes when I took this shot...it's a sign that I need to wrap up the shoot.

I am experimenting on food styling. I like how most food cookbooks and magazines abroad are styled. They are kind of whimsy and fresh. So I followed my food styling direction from that. I am satisfied with the result, but I am more satisfied after I partake the colorful macarons.

Macarons are a Parisian pastry. They are so famous that these colorful sweets are featured in almost all Paris travel photos I've seen. I am so happy that I do not have to go to Paris to enjoy them. I first saw these macarons at the Fudge cafe in Banilad, Mandaue. Then, I had heard of the Macarons Tango Cafe at OsmeƱa Blvd, Cebu and that's where I got these goodies. I got the mango, mint chocolate, coffee, chocolate, and strawberry flavors, although there are more available flavors at the cafe. The buttercream/jam filling tastes like "pastillas" with a thinner consistency and non-milky taste. The cookies, which sandwich the filling, are soft and airy. My first taste experience was definitely good and it satisfied my curiosity. Each cute macaron comes with a P40 price, but you may also get the box of six or box of twelve which comes with a discounted price.

Boudoir: Concept Shoot

Everything that comes out of me is authentically mine because I alone chose it.

I own everything about me; my body; my feelings; my mouth...I own all of me.

However I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time is authentically me.

I can discard that which is unfitting, keep the rest, and invent something new for that which I discarded.

I can see, hear, feel, think, say and do - I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive, and to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me.

I own me, and therefore I can engineer me - I am me and I am okay.

Love-Hate Relationship with Mr. Sun

"Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy"

Over the weekend, I had outdoor photo sessions and I kept on praying that both days would have a beautiful weather. It was indeed a sunny weekend. It was gorgeous, but the trick is to find the right time for the location of choice because there are open spaces that are great in photos, but are not too friendly to the subject and to myself as the photographer.

I don't like the outdoors especially when the sun is too high or up. My skin doesn't agree with it and I sweat a lot. I am even told by my sister that I chose the wrong "interest/hobby". But when a session gets rolling, I soon forget the sun and the sweat. I keep going because I am committed to deliver the photos that my subjects deserve. A thank you, a happy face, and a cheeky grin will make me forget that I am "sun-toasted" on that day :-).

If I have a choice between a rainy day and a sunny day, I prefer the latter. The best day is on a very cloudy and breezy day, which when it happens albeit very seldom, I must have done something so great for mother nature to bestow me such a lovely day. My entry below for Project 64: Out of the Box: gold also reminds me of the overwhelming power of a sunrise or a sunset. Happy Monday everyone!

An Experiment on Abstract

"Abstract art: a product of the untalented sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered."
- Al Capp -

I came across this quote about abstract art...it is funny, but I don't think this applies to every abstract art. I have actually seen many abstract artists who produce great art. I am even inspired to thread into this path for once. Allow me to share some photos of an afternoon I felt like making abstract art.

"It [abstract art] should be enjoyed just as music is enjoyed
- after a while you may like it or you may not."

The Juntilla's (Soon Will Be a Family of 4)

"Oneness. We are hues of color, yet one
In Spirits blossom"

I am so grateful to be trusted by another awesome family to photograph them. It's a family of three for now...but it won't be for long. There's Mia, the queen of the household (don't kill me for this Mia); Edwin, the king (well I have to be consistent with the metaphors :-)); and Loise, the little spunky princess. The funny, vivacious, feisty, and cute little girl is a dear princess and that's the reason why I have to continue with the analogy and refer both Mia and Edwin as the queen and king of their households, respectively.

Anyway, Mia and I agreed to have a maternity session on her 8th month for memories sake. But days before the agreed date, we decided to let Loise tag along. We were about to have a photo session, when unexpectedly, the park location we went to closed for the day. This turn of events was a boon because Mia mentioned that her hubby would have wanted to be included in the pics too. I definitely welcomed such request because it would be more livelier and memorable to have a family photo session; thus, a reschedule was in order. Moreover, she happens to live in a military base of which I always wonder how to get a special pass. You see, I know that this military base has well kept meadows and trees arranged like a military platoon (grin). Kidding aside, I wanted so much to take a picture of those trees as a background. I'm glad that the park closed for that day because one downer was exchanged with two blessings in disguise.

The Juntilla's are awaiting for another bundle of joy, a baby boy. It's so nice because Loise will soon have a playmate. It's also a great blessing for Mia and Edwin because they will soon have a boy-girl pair. Loise is a spitting image of her papa. I wonder if the newborn will have her mama's looks and if that so happens Mia will have her own look-a-like :-).

Reve Parisien

So grand, so romantic, an ultimate dream.
But I am terrified...is it gonna be as grand as it is in a dream?
What if it's not?
What if it is?

My mojo is back!!! I am posting a photo for Project 64 on a Monday (big grin). I took a break from being out every weekend for photo shoots. I think that this is doing me good because I re-focused and found my creativity back.

So many worries, so many apprehensions!
Better leave the worrying to some other time
Oh...Better yet to stop right away
because it's not getting me anywhere. ;-)
There I answered my self! Ha Ha!

If the Shoe Fits

"Give a girl the correct footwear and she can conquer the world."
- Bette Midler -

Are you a shoe or a bag person? As for me, I am a shoe person. Tag me along to a bag shopping and I am completely clueless. I don't know what and how to select a bag from the wide-array of choices that are out there in the market. It's a good thing that I have a sister whom I can call anytime and can give me good advice. In fact most of the bags that I like to use are those chosen by my sister and I raid her closet for her bags too. But when it comes to shoes...I must confess it's a weakness of mine. Sometimes I buy shoes because I fancy them, but I don't get to use them that often; thus, they end up collecting dust in the shoe rack.

Coco Chanel said, “A woman with good shoes is never ugly. They are the last touch of elegance.” Shoes can make a difference in the way you look. In photo sessions, I most often suggest wearing shoes rather than flip flops. In the fashion world, flip flops are a crime no matter how expensive they are. I say, flip flops are okay, but it must go with the location and the look that you want to achieve. Check out What to Wear (& More) section for a photo session preparation tips.

Sneak Peek: Three Plus One (coming soon)

"A grand adventure is about to begin."
- Pooh -

In a family of three there's just Loise, the little girl whom her parents dote upon...

But in a few months time, Loise will become a big sister and her playtime will no longer be lonely.

A full post about this wonderful family will be coming soon...

Periwinkle

"Time when pursued like a bandit - will behave like one."
- Eat, Pray, Love -

Oh my where did September go? And now it's almost mid-October. Why do I feel like I'm trying to keep up with the days that seem to be slipping away so fast? I feel exhausted, but I think in a good way because I've been spending my waking minute doing something productive especially on the things I love to do. Yay for me, no procrastination on that, but sometimes I have to sit back and think about my priorities because other important things that I need to do are taking a set back. Sigh, the sacrifices one has to make. If only it's not so difficult to serve two masters at the same time. Huh!!!

Food: Pizza and Coffee

Keep calm and spend time with a friend.

This is just what I did when work became so stressful. My friend and I went to a spa for a girls night out and caught up with each other over dinner and coffee afterward. It was a weekend and we wanted to stay away from the Cebu crowd, so we headed to Yellow Cab and Bo's coffee at Banilad Town Center.

Yellow Cab is a pizza chain which got it's name from the taxis in New York, USA. The restaurant is nothing fancy with an interior that is consistent with NY's yellow taxis. The menu offers a good enough variety of pizzas, calzone, and pastas. Their best seller is none other New York's Best, but for that night we opted for a vegetable calzone. We are on a diet, you know. ;)

We had a lot of things to talk about so we continued our conversation over dessert and coffee at Bo's. Bo's Coffee is a local business which offers good coffee that can be at par with the foreign brands. They have some desserts too. I was avoiding sweets, but I could not help and tried their "Food for the gods". It was served warm and it went very well with coffee. Yum, yum, yum!!!

It was a night of over indulgence, but I don't mind because it is always nice to catch up with a friend. Friends, family, the familiarity of the place, and my favorite hang out places are just a few of the things that make it difficult for me to leave this town.

Travel: Imperial Water Park Resort and Spa

I had a chance to visit the Imperial Water Park Resort and Spa in Mactan, Cebu last month. Thanks to the Cenabre's for the opportunity. Thank you!!! I had heard about the park a year ago, but I never took the prerogative to avail its amenities. I dunno probably because I just live nearby and I kept on thinking that I would have plenty of time to go. I had heard so many good and fun things at the park; so one weekend I made sure to take a lot of photos to share.

The resort is also a hotel. In fact, there are two big buildings that house 556 rooms. Wow!!!

Upon entry to the resort, you will be greeted with a grand foyer that leads to a cafe and a few shops. I love the availability of various chairs and sofas, but the set up extremely reminds me of another resort in Mactan. I am puzzled, but I brushed it off easily.

This is a water park right? And true to it's name, the resort boasts not just 1, not 2, but 5 swimming pools. For variety and enjoyment, each pool has a theme which includes an Amazon, a wave, a beach, a Captain Hook's, and a toddler's pool. I also noticed some lifeguards on duty; it's nice to know that they are concerned with safety.

Now, if you are one who do not like swimming pools and would rather sit back, relax, and enjoy the beach or the sea view; then, the resort also offers such interest. The beach front is not that wide though, but it's good enough for some R&R. Of course, one will be exhausted after availing the resort's amenities...food is something they do not miss to offer. They have several restaurants, but just like any luxury resort, it's gotta be pricey. I like the seaside restaurant with an open-roof dining. It's a nice place to enjoy the sea breeze with a sumptuous meal.

The resort offers a day and a night tripper package without having to stay overnight or book a room. It's a nice idea especially for locals. They also have a special pricing for local residents, you just have to prove your residency. I even saw other foreigners who were staying in other resorts who also avail of these packages. One thing I also noticed, their patrons are predominantly Koreans. It's not surprising considering that the resort is owned by a Korean.

Eventually, I cannot help but form a conclusion that the resort looks like a replica of Shangrila, Mactan; albeit with a few differences here and there. My observation is confirmed by others and I am even told of an "urban legend" about how and why the park is built as such. I'll just leave it like this, a mystery...but for sure no mystery will shroud the promise of a fun and exciting activities at the resort.
